Synopsis
Yuris Podnieks’ personal study of Baltic nationalism. Intercuts individual testimony of oppression with joyous celebrations at the 1990 Summer Folk Song Festival, the first chance Latvians had had in two generations to publicly express their nationalism and cultural heritage. Includes footage of the unrest in Vilnius and Riga in spring 1991 during which Podnieks’ leading cameraman, Andris Slapins, was shot dead. These events foreshadowed the declaration of independence of the Baltic republics which was realised half a year later.
