Synopsis
Five 20-minute programmes using amateur film footage together with eyewitness accounts to show ways in which ordinary people filmed everyday life in Britain and Germany during the war years 1939-45: 1) The Children’s War: war, evacuation and school life seen through the eyes of German and British children; 2) Blitz: preparations for war, including advice on building an air raid shelter and defending one’s home from air attack, and the terror of war; 3) Resistance: the British and the Germans feared invasion, governments prepared for it, and cameras filmed the results; 4) Work and Play: radical changes in working life in factory and field, contrasted with the everyday traditions and holidays, Christmas, and enjoying life; 5) Victory and Defeat: ways in which the camera captured the celebration of victory in Britain and the bitterness of defeat in Germany.
