Hampshire’s Steam Pumping Stations (2 Parts)

Synopsis
1 (1972): Shows a water pumping station in 1926 that survived virtually unchanged until 1971. Shows a general view of the pumping station, and then moves step-by-step from the hand stoking of the steam boilers to the movement of the reciprocating water pumps. Explains the working of a large triple expansion steam engine, using detailed views of the various parts such as the cranks and flywheel. Explains the functions of each part of the engine and the work of the men who ran it.
2 (1975): Shows a sewage pumping station in Garnier Road, Winchester, which up until March 1975 used household refuse as fuel to power two steam engines supplied by Messrs Sissons in 1959. The original steam engine house was built in 1878 and its engineer was Sir James Lemon. The works was extended in 1904 to house a second steam engine and in 1930 to house diesel engines. The film follows the process through from the arrival of the dustcarts with the refuse to the stoking of the boilers and the workings of the steam engines. It also shows one electric and two diesel engines in current use which operate reciprocating pumps made and installed by Messrs Pearn of Manchester.
