Gombrich on Shadows

Synopsis
Sir Ernst Gombrich presented an exhibition at the National Gallery in 1995 on the representation of cast shadows in painting - a subject combining the psychology of perception with the history of art. While shading, has been universally used in Western art to give the illusion of relief, the cast shadow has appeared more rarely. This video explores why, after their invention in ancient Greece, painted cast shadows were abandoned by Western artists, and for what various ends they came to be used after their re-introduction in the 17th century. Shows works by works by Duccio, Caravaggio, Rembrandt, Claude, Pissarro and Seurat.
