Genstat: A Preview. Part 2: Fitting Models

Synopsis
The scope provided by Genstat to model statistical data is illustrated by considering a medical trial in which patients are allocated at random to one of two drugs that contribute to anaesthesia but differ in their effect on the patients’ recovery time. The mean blood-pressure during anaesthesia seems to be the most significant patient variable, but the data require careful analysis to determine its significance. The programme illustrates the ease with which models of the system can be set up in the Genstat language and analysed directly by standard procedures, in this case a linear regression. Once created, the model is easy to modify and re-analyse; this is exemplified by changing to the logarithm of the independent variables.
