Garden Days: Village in Papua New Guinea

Synopsis
A record of Rauit village, Sepik Inland, Papua New Guinea, chiefly from the woman’s point of view. Opens with the final stages of a ritual called ‘malyi’ with a masked dancer performing and the villagers gathered. Describes women’s everyday activities in their ‘gardens’ in order to produce the staple food sago. The different stages of the preparation and cooking of sago are shown. Closes with with a young girl’s puberty ceremony. Filmed in 1968-9.*
