Frank Auerbach

Synopsis
To mark the major retrospective of Auerbach’s work at the Hayward Gallery in London in 1978, Tony Cash filmed some of the paintings and drawings in the exhibition, then talked to the artist about these works. Auerbach discusses his preferences for painting the same subject many times (there are 16-18 paintings of Mornington Crescent); what prompts the decision to use charcoal rather than paint, the translation of ‘solid form’ into paint on canvas. A shortened version of the television programme.
