First Year Petrography

Synopsis
Teaching module on introductory petrography. Images of rock thin-sections and hand specimens are used extensively. Covers basic petrography, tools used in petrographic examination, identification of mineral species in hand specimen and thin-section, the classification of rocks into igneous, sedimentary or metamorphic according to minerals present and relative abundances and grain size. Approximately 4 hours of teaching material, intended to complement lectures and practicals.
