Synopsis
'In vitro’ fertilisation has become a major tool in experimental biology and of considerable importance for assisting reproduction in infertile couples. Gives a step-by-step account of IVF in the laboratory mouse: 1) hormonal stimulation of ovarian follicle development; 2) preparation of culture media; 3) isolation of eggs and sperm and their combination in vitro; 4) culture of embryos through preimplantation stages; 5) transfer of embryos to pseudopregnant host mothers followed by the birth of pups. Provides details of the techniques at each step, and explains where relevant, the developmental biology.
