Feeding Habits of Leeches ('Hirudinea’)

Synopsis
'Erpobdella octoculata’, ‘Hirudo medicinalis’ (medicinal leech), ‘Haemopis sanguisuga’ (horse leech), ‘Glossiphonia’ (snail leech), ‘Helobdella stagnalis’, ‘Piscicola geometra’ (fish leech). ‘Erpobdella’, ‘Haemopis’ and ‘Glossiphonia’ swallow their prey (insect larvae, annelid worms, mussels) whole or in large parts. ‘Hirudo’ cuts through the skin of vertebrates (demonstrated on a cat’s skin) with its jaws and sucks their blood. ‘Piscicola’ gets its nourishment from fish blood. ‘Helobdella’ sucks out the contents of its small, invertebrate prey.
