Title
Introduction to ophthalmoscopy, An
Synopsis
1: Introduces the ophthalmoscope, clearly describing its controls. A detailed demonstration shows how to examine a patient’s retina using the ophthalmoscope, with close-up images of what can be seen with this instrument. The examination technique sequence is followed by examples of clinical abnormalities shown as close-ups alongside a ‘reference’ close-up of a normal retina. This section teaches how to arrive at a correct diagnosis, and describes possible causes. It highlights key points to look for, and describes common pitfalls.

Title
Introduction to visual fields, An
Synopsis
2:Starts out by providing clear definitions of the terms used to describe visual field defects.
It goes on to show the neuroanatomy associated with vision using a dynamic 3-D model of the brain and visual system. This enables the viewer to see how a patient’s visual fields relate to the associated anatomy and therefore indicate possible diagnosis of field defects. A full demonstration of confrontational testing is followed by a look at automated field-testing techniques - both ‘kinetic’ and ‘static’ - and an introduction to the visual field chart. Finally shows the effects of various neurological lesions on the visual fields. Each lesion position is identified on a graphic at the top of screen while, at the bottom of the screen, images representing both eyes illustrate the defect as experienced by the patient, before being overlayed by the relevant charts. Key points to watch for are identified to help the viewer make correct diagnoses.

Title
Introduction to the slit lamp, An
Synopsis
The modern slit lamp is probably the most versatile instrument available to the ophthalmologist - lending itself perfectly to examination of most parts of the eye, from the cornea to the retina.

This video starts by showing the instrument, its controls and what they do, before going on to demonstrate how to perform its main application - examination of the anterior segment of the eye. The theory and practical application of the four main illumination techniques - Direct Illumination, Retroillumination, Sclerotic Scatter and Specular Reflection - are covered using live action, graphics and video microscope images through the slit lamp itself!

Title
Biomicroscopy of the retina using the slit lamp
Synopsis
The slit lamp, used with ancillary lenses, can provide an image of the retina with a wider field of view than is possible using the direct ophthalmoscope. More importantly the image is also stereoscopic, enabling a much more detailed examination of any features.

The video describes the slit lamp’s advantages over the direct ophthalmoscope, the type of ancillary lenses needed, and goes on to demonstrate how these lenses are used for retinal examination. Live action and video microscope images taken through the slit lamp itself highlight how to hold and position the lens and how to perform a scan of the retina. It shows how to deal with the potential problems of working with a combination of lamp movements, lens movements and inverted images when performing a retinal examination.
