Embedded Retaining Walls
- Synopsis
- Describes the method of construction of embedded retaining walls and shows details of the field instrumentation work being undertaken as part of a major research investigation by the TRL’s Ground Engineering Division into the performance of such walls during construction and in the longer term. Specific construction sites shown include M25 Bell Common tunnel (secant pile wall); A3 Malden Way underpass (contiguous bored pile wall); Derbyshire (diaphragm wall); A329M Reading (cantilever diaphragm wall); Neasden Lane underpass (anchored diaphragm wall). Instruments used for monitoring include piezometer, geomensor electronic distance measuring equipment, inclinometer tubes, vibrating wire strain gauges, spade pressure cells, Marchetti dilatometer and the self-boring pressure meter.
