Election Witness 1983

Synopsis
Staff at the Centre monitored the national press during the four weeks preceding the June 1983 election. The 28 cartoons chosen distil the essence from the campaign of the three major parties. The cartoons are seen as the most effective commentaries on the campaign. Issues include the Falklands War, reworking of the notorious Tory ‘Labour says he’s black’ poster, CND, the unions, and the cartoonists’ savage treatment of the leaders. Discusses Margaret Thatcher’s confidence, Michael Foot’s ineffectiveness and the relations between Alliance bosses.
