- Synopsis
- Defines and classifies drug interactions. Considers factors contributing to adverse drug interactions, including characteristics of the drug, characteristics of the patient, polypharmacy and self-medication. Discusses pharmacokinetic interactions, where drug levels can be affected during absorption, metabolism or excretion, as well as pharmacodynamic interaction, in which blood levels of drug are not altered, but two drugs can act synergistically or antagonistally. Also describes the effect of food and alcohol on plasma drug levels.
