Dna Profiling

Synopsis
Chris Hadkiss, London DNA Manager of the Forensic Science Services, explains the process used by the FSS to establish a person’s DNA profile. He compares the old technique of radioactive tagging to the new method of fluorescent tagging, discusses sources of DNA for sample-taking, and explains and illustrates the entire profiling process from the sample extraction, through quantification, amplification and separation to the interpretation of results. He also discusses the future of DNA profiling and gives an example of how the FSS helped to identify a member of the Russian royal family by using mitochondrial DNA.
