Synopsis
Discusses the problem of diarrhoea, the recognition of dehydration, how oral hydration works and the practicalities of giving effective oral fluids even in the most primitive and under-privileged conditions. Highlights the problem that in many Third-World countries diarrhoea is associated with malnutrition. Shows how ordinary salt and sugar can be used if the more complex prepared glucose and electrolyte solutions cannot be obtained, and the dangers of hypernatraemia are stressed.
