Diagnostic Anaesthesia in Lower Leg Lameness

Synopsis
By using local anaesthesia to desensitise specific areas, and then observing its effect on the horse’s gait, the practitioner is able to confirm the diagnosis, or if uncertain, to locate the site of pain and source of trouble. The physical examination of the animal, nervous system anatomy of the lower limbs and descriptions of the sites of nerve blocks and technique to be used in giving the local anaesthetic are described. Diagnosis of lameness is not discussed in detail.
