Synopsis
Three role-played interactions demonstrate crises experienced in working with depressed people and suggest how they might be resolved. The importance of listening with understanding, giving physical contact, and realising that the helper needs to share responsibilty and to seek support from colleagues are emphasises Examples are 1) an industrial accident leaves a middle-aged man unable to continue the job he has held for many years; 2) a mother meets the social worker to talk about her teenage son’s recent behaviour and absenteeism; 3) a middle-aged woman has disappeared from hospital.
