Introduction to the kinematics of the deformation of continous media, without a bias toward solid or fluid mechanics, or rheology, but with an awaremness of the needs of each. Introduces rotation, strain, principal axes and deformation rate by analysis of patterns marked on the surface of gylcerine in a rectilinear Couette flow.
