Deer Farming
- Synopsis
- The Scottish Highlands are the traditional home of the red deer, which have provided an expensive sport rather than a source of meat. Farming in these areas has been mainly restricted to sheep rearing which has become uneconomic. Deer are naturally adapted to the sometimes harsh environment and can fend for themselves in most Scottish winters. Over the last few years, the Hill Farming Research Station and the Rowett Research Institute have been investigating the possibilites of farming the red deer for commercial meat production. Looks at the annual cycle of the red deer, experimental observations that have been carried out, and the problems and the successes experienced. On the strength of this research, the Highland and Islands Development Board have bought a large estate at Rahoy in the West Highlands to start the first large scale experimental deer farm in Scotland.

At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
