Decline of Tsarism, The

Synopsis
Uses a variety of sources including a series of early colour photographs commissioned for Nicholas II and a painting by Il’ya Repin entitled ‘Religious Procession in the Kirsk Gubernia’, to show how oblique any criticism of Tsarism had to be. The series of Bolshevik and Anarchist cartoons and clips from Eisenstein’s OKTOBER are shown and very briefly discussed and an extract from the Soviet film BEFORE THE JUDGEMENT OF HISTORY is examined. Outlines an autocracy devoid of any aim except remaining in power and prepared to use any combination of religion, racism and repression to do so. The abdication is presented as a fumbled attempt by the Russian elite to save the dynasty by making Nicholas the scapegoat for the disasters of the First World War. Presented by Dr C J Read.
