AIDS: A Strange and Deadly Virus
- Synopsis
- Reports on the race to find a cure for AIDS visiting America’s National Institute of Health to examine the progress being made in the world’s most advaced vaccine research programme. Scientists explain the anatomy of the virus that causes AIDS, how development of an effective vaccine and treatment has been hampered by the way the virus undermines the body’s natural immune defences, and their hopes for an experimental drug AZT. In San Francisco evidence suggests that the disease has spread beyond those groups once considered most at risk, and that 25 million people could be carrying the virus without knowing it.
