Critical Mass

Synopsis
Based on two lectures given in Edinburgh in October 1980 by Dr Helen Caldicott, chairman of Physicians for Social Responsibility, and winner of the 1980 Gandhi Peace Prize. She claims that although war is the greatest threat to life, nuclear power is extremely hazardous to health. She talks about each stage of the nuclear fuel cycle, uranium mining, its enrichment in electricity generating power stations, the extraction of plutonium for the reactors, and finally its use in nuclear warheads. Dr Caldicott discusses in some detail what she sees as the effects of radiation, and the dangers of faulty reactors.
