Copperworking in Santa Clara del Cobre, MichoacÁn, Mexico: Artisans Facing Change

Synopsis: Santa Clara del Cobre is a centre for the craft of copperworking, a craft originating from pre-Spanish times. As in colonial times, copper utensils are beaten into shape. In the 1940s the industry expanded to include copper plate and ornaments for town customers. Craftsmen demonstrate kettle-making, chiselled plate and flower vases and explain the development of their craft and the problems they face.
