Synopsis
The four bands of this DVD consist entirely of computer-generated animations showing features of complex arithmetic, complex functions and limiting processes. The band on complex arithmetic demonstrates cartesian and polar co-ordinates, complex addition, complex multiplication, division and reciprocals, powers and roots. The band on complex functions shows the effect on cartesian and polar grids of a variety of complex functions, including power functions, exponential and trigonometric functions, and the principal logarithm function. The band on limiting processes shows the meaning of the epsilon-N definition of the convergence of a complex sequence (and also the meaning of the related definition of divergence), the definition of continuity in terms of sequences, and the effect of the derivative of a function in relating a sequence to its image. The final band discusses quadratic iteration sequences. The classification of the behaviour of such sequences leads to the Mandelbrot set, and the associated Julia sets.

Notes
NB. As of May 2016 Open University Worldwide are no longer distributing DVDs. They have posted this message on their website: ‘Unfortunately Open University Worldwide Limited has decided that product sales are no longer viable given the reduced funding to Higher Education institutions and diminishing demand for the products we have traditionally stocked. At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
