Cloning: How and Why

Synopsis
Visits the Roslin Institute in Edinburgh, where Dolly the sheep was cloned, and Neal First’s laboratory at the University of Wisconsin-Madison where the first cloning of a cow from an embryonic cell took place. Explains what exactly cloning is and the techniques involved, together with a consideration of some of the ethical issues raised and the potential benefits of cloning to our society today. This controversial biotechnological advance is explained in biological terms and the process of cloning animals is looked at, leading to discussion of the potential of using transgenic animals to produce useful drugs and possible organs or cells for human transplantation. The need for further debate on the issues of therapeutic and reproductive cloning is emphasised.
