Clinical Features of Myotonic Dystrophy and Huntington’s Disease
- Synopsis
- Introduces the clinical relevance of myotonic dystrophy and Huntington’s disease. In two parts: 1) myotonic dystrophy: a consultant in clinical genetics talks to a family where the mother does not have the disorder, the father shows no obvious symptoms, but their two daughters clearly do. The consultant demonstrates the myotonia and percussion myotonia with the hand, the facial weakness, and the weakness of the neck muscles associated with the disorder; 2) Huntington’s disease: the consultant meets three patients in various stages of development of Huntington’s disease, and the degree of chorea in each is evident. With the cooperation of each of the patients, he demonstrates bradykinesia, dysdiadochokinesia and abnormal saccadic eye movements in all three cases. Finally, the consultant compares the gaits of the three patients when they are asked to walk heel-to-toe.
