Classical Sculpture and the Enlightenment

Synopsis
The Grand Tour took many people of taste and wealth to Italy in the 18th century. Antique artefacts brought back from some of these travels form the nucleus of many of today’s museum collections. This programme concentrates on the important British collector Charles Townley, whose collection of marble statuary is now in the British Museum. Highlights the problems of interpreting the subject of sculptures - which is dealt with by examining the work of the 18th-century scholar Winkelmann - restoration and the difficulties of exporting major works from Italy. Shows and discusses publications and catalogues of Greek and Roman works of art which informed and influenced the British taste for the classical world.

At present the Open University Students Association (OUSA) will continue to sell the "Good Study Guide", and we are in discussion with other possible distributors to continue to make The Open University’s products available for purchase. As soon as we have any information on other channels of distribution we will update this notice’. Some products are still available via second hand dealers on Amazon.co.uk
