Cancer Detectives of Lin Xian, The

Synopsis
Lin Xian in north-central China is a 20 mile square area in which one out of four people die of cancer of the oesophagus - more than 100 times the normal rate. Shows how a team of scientists try to find the causes of the disease and the preventative health care campaign that develops from the research. The central argument is that the Chinese approach is a particular one. The health campaign draws on traditional Chinese medicine and seeks, though mass mobilisation, to transform the peasant’s way of life. The contrast is made with Western approaches to cancer research with its emphasis on high technology - the argument is that the two approaches are complementary.
