Breast Feeding: Practical Problems of Techniques

Synopsis
Accepting that breast feeding is the ideal form of infant nutrition, reviews the commonest problems encountered by mothers in establishing successful breast feeding. Comments drawn from recorded interviews with many feeding mothers are used for illustration and a number of mothers demonstrate specific points of technique or difficulty. After showing a normal breastfeeding couple, the following topics are considered: correct/comfortable positioning - fixing and the rooting instincts - small nipples - engorgement - expressing - the let-down reflex - cracked nipples - establishing a regular routine. The importance of assisting the mother to maintain a confident and optimistic attitude is emphasised throughout.
