Women in the Twentieth Century
- Synopsis
- Three programmes presenting historical film in a critical context, seeking to challenge the ‘one view’ interpretation of history. The programmes ask questions about who produced the films, when, why and for whom. They supply primary historical source material that otherwise would not be available to students and teachers.
1: During both world wars, films were made to enourage millions of young women to join the workforce and perform jobs traditionally carried out by men.
2: A look at how patronising the images of women at work have been until quite recently, when working women have been presented as inspirational role models.
3: Looks at different views of women, from Nazi Germany propaganda about the subservient role of women, to the idealised family of the 1950s where dad went to work and mum stayed at home, to more recent films and the revolt agains this stereotype which has helped to generate a new feminism. - Series
