- Synopsis
- The 20th century has seen the movement to the public sphere of many of the tasks previously performed at home. Housework has become mechanised, taking a fraction of the time and effort that was previously demanded. The one exception to these trends is the care of young children. The programme examines the reasons for this - why child care cannot be treated as any other product to be produced and sold in the marketplace. It also looks at the economic consequences for women and their employers of the present lack of good-quality child care at affordable prices.
