- Synopsis
- The series offers a positive approach to women’s health, taking maintenance of good health and prevention of illness as starting points. They are based on the direct experience of ordinary women.
Part 1: Explains the female reproductive system. A doctor is shown carrying out an internal examination and performing a cervical smear test. Self-help advice is given to women suffering from cystisis and thrush.
Part 2: Looks at common problems associated with menstruation. Women speak about the relief they have found in yoga, homeopathic tablets, Vitamin B6 and other methods to combat pain and depression.
Part 3: Covers the range of contraceptives available and the side-effects they may have. Looks into the question of choosing the appropriate method of contraception to suit individual ways of life. Discusses abortion and sterilisation.
Part 4: Discusses the menopause. Older women talk about how they have coped with its often distressing symptoms. Shows how to carry out a breast examination.
Part 5: Looks at problems caused by isolation, loneliness and post-natal depression and the ways in which such problems can be overcome. Cases discussed include a self-help support group, Citizens Advice Bureaux, medication and the Samaritans. - Language
