War Crimes Tribunal, The / Reconciliation Radio

Synopsis
Part of a series exploring ways of resolving conflicts across Africa.
1. After being shocked and outraged by the genocide that took place in Rwanda, the international community is trying to bring the perpetrators to justice before an international tribunal. Prosecution is an arduous, complicated process, and during the first two years has not gone smoothly. Charges of inefficiency and mismanagement abound. This film looks at the difficulties inherent in re-establishing justice and deals with implications for Africa and the rest of the world.
2. Neighbouring Rwanda is Burundi, where animosities between Hutus and Tutsis have resulted in thousands of deaths. In Burundi, as in Rwanda, hate radio has been used to incite ethnic violence. But in Burundi, radio is also being utilised as a means of building understanding and promoting reconciliation. At Studio Ijambo, Hutu and Tutsi journalists work together to provide balanced news, features and even soap operas.
