Walls of Colour: The Technique of Fresco Painting

Synopsis
Illustrates the technique of painting in fresco, combining studio demonstrations with location filming of the Palazzo Pubblico in Siena, the Spanish Chapel in Florence and the Villa Farnesina and the Farnese Palace in Rome. James Heard demonstrates step-by-step the preparation of lime plaster, making the underdrawing or ‘sinopia’, and the application of plaster in sections (or ‘giornate - the work of one day), as well as the actual painting process using pigments ground in lime water.
