Synopsis

Five programmes illustrating key concepts in cell biology, using short, narrated animations and live-action microscope views of living cells: 1) Cells and Mulecules: variety of cells; cell organisation; overview of organic molecules; prokaryotes; flagellated protists; amoeboid protists; ciliated protists; the endosymbiotic theory of eukaryotic cell evolution; 2) Cell Movement and Transport: behaviour of the plasma membrane; osmosis; transport proteins; phagocytosis; pinocytosis; receptor mediated endocytosis; Golgi function; lysosomes and digestion; microtubules; cilia; actin and myosin motor proteins; 3) Photosynthesis and Cellular Respiration: chloroplast structure; light trapping by chrolophyll; the light-dependent and -independent reactions of photosynthesis; glycolysis and fermentation; mitochondrion structure; aerobic respiration; Krebs cycle, electron transport chain; ATP synthesis.

The DVD is an updated version of the video series and includes new animations and new microscope footage. The ‘Visualizing Cell Processes Interactive Learning Guide’ is also provided on the DVD as well as being available separately.
