Blacksmiths, Quarrymen and Sculptors

Synopsis
Ilustrates the working lifestyle of the last blacksmith on Portland. Includes an interview where he discusses his lifestyle. The recording then goes on to look at the event of ‘winning the stone’, where blocks of stone are cut and won by masons and quarrymen using traditional hand-quarrying techniques, from the working face of Tout Quarry on the island of Portland, Dorset. Scenes show the men at work, and retired quarrymen and masons interviewed about their earlier quarrying days recall the myths and legends associated with the craft. Filmed in July 1993.
