Vietnam: The 10,000 Day War

Synopsis
A boxed set comprising the whole of the 26-part series first transmitted by the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation in 1980 and later transmitted by Channel 4 in the UK. The series explains how and why the war was really fought and brings the conflict to life with some dramatic combat footage. It includes exclusive film from Hanoi’s military archives, showing what combat was like from the perspective of the Viet Cong and NVA.
Part 1: Shows how America became involved in the Vietnamese conflict, with the spectacular defeat of the French colonial forces at Dien Bien Phu and how, once in, America was increasingly obliged to take over the running of the war. Chronicles early American field operations, showing how ‘hearts and minds’ tactics and jungle patrols soon gave way to massive helicopter-borne ‘search and destroy’ missions. Also tells the other side of the story, with a look at the NVA and Viet Cong operations on the Ho Chi Minh trail, which was the lifeline for guerillas waging war in the south.
Part 2: In 1968 the Tet holiday truce in Vietnam was shattered by a massive Viet Cong offensive. As US Marines and ARVN units fought wave after wave of guerrilla attacks in Saigon, the Imperial City of Hue was overrun and occupied by Communist forces. The battle to liberate the city would be the bloodiest of the entire war... American morale was shattered. Until this point they had believed their leaders’ assurances that they were winning the war. Now Saigon was in flames, the US Embassy overrun, Hue occupied and US Marines trapped inside the base at Khe Sanh by a huge NVA force which threatened to overwhelm and massacre them at any moment... This video tells the story of the Tet offensive. It looks at the battlefield conditions and tactics of both sides and at the fate of those taken as prisoners of war, as well as the controversial decision to bomb North Vietnam into submission.
