Veterinary Oral Surgery
- Synopsis
- Summarises the general surgical principles involved in tooth surgery and stresses the potentially disastrous consequences of poor technique. Describes the anatomy of the tooth and its alveolar structures, with diagrams showing the pathological processes which may provide indications for extraction - caries, root abscess formation, tooth fracture and destruction of the alveolar bone in periodontitis. Describes the surgical instruments available and their correct use, and then details the steps involved in the extraction of the single tooth with the single root, progressing to multiple extractions and the extraction of teeth with more than one root. Alveoloplasty and gum suturing should be employed routinely where appropriate. Reviews possible complications of tooth extraction - fractured roots, secondary infection and haemorrhage.
