Turning a Sphere Inside out

Synopsis
In 1958 Stephen Smale demonstrated that it must be possible to turn a sphere inside out in three dimensions, without tearing or creasing the surface, but allowing the sphere to pass through itself. He was unable to construct an explicit process for doing so - called a homotopy - but several have now been found. The film demonstrates such a homotopy constructed by the blind topologist Bernard Morin, using chicken wire models constructed by Charles Pugh.
