Troubles, The (5 Parts)
- Synopsis
- 1: An account of the British conquest of Ireland and the sense of grievance and resentment it created.
2: Examines how Ireland came to be partitioned in 1921.
3: Traces the history of the Northern Ireland state from 1920 to 1970.
4: Deals with the period from 1966 until Bloody Sunday, 30 January 1972, which signalled the collapse of Stormont.
5: Begins in 1972 and ends in January 1981. After Direct Rule was imposed, an increasingly strident Loyalist backlash and an unremitting campaign by the Provisional IRA showed the question of Northern Ireland to be still unsolved. The British Government sought a political answer by sponsoring an initiative based on Catholics and Protestants (Republicians and Loyalists) sharing power, and the setting up of a Council of Ireland. Against a background of Provisional IRA violence, and para-military Loyalist sectarian killings, the Protestants mounted a growing campaign of resistance to power-sharing which culminated in the Ulster Workers’ Council Strike of 1974. This brought down the Power-Sharing Executive and shattered the British solution to Northern Ireland’s problems. With contributions from the historians interviewed in the series, the programme traces the recurring themes and echoes of the past which re-emerge in the present. - Language
