Trees of Plenty

Synopsis
In Nepal, the Central American rain forests of Costa Rica and in Nigeria, slash-and-burn farming methods are showing long-term harmful effects. Where trees have been cleared the top soil becomes eroded and starved of essential nutriments. Crops have no shade and animals no fodder. Alternative methods of farming are being developed by the IDRC in conjunction with local institutes. Includes the planting of multi-purpose leguminous trees which provide a rich source of nitrogen, benefitting all food crops.
