Synopsis
Series examining how and why the tourist business evolved, and how our perceptions and understanding of the world have altered as a result. Looks at the cultural and commercial impact of this travel, and the connections tourism has with work and leisure, fantasy and national identity.
1: The desire to get away from everyday reality first found expression in the taking of scenic holidays in the English countryside. Nowadays, some tourists find necessary to travel great distances to find peace and isolation.
2: The story of Thomas Cook, the company that offered the first commercial tourist excursion around the world. Explores how the tourist business has changed over the years.
3: The development of Torremolinos on the Costa del Sol in Spain from fishing village to package-holiday resort. Interviews Spanish people including bar owners, hotel managers and the minister who, under General Franco’s dictatorship, helped to establish modern mass tourism in the area.
4: The rise and fall of the British holiday camp, including interviews with Sir Fred Pontin, Lady Butlin and Jimmy Perry, co-creator of ‘Hi-de-Hi!.
5: Tourism in London. Guides, hotel managers and the tourists themselves discuss what people expect London to offer, and whether their expectations of the capital city are fully satisfied.
6: The history of theme parks, from Disneyland (1955) to the latest hotel complexes in Las Vegas. Also examines how mucht he nature and function of tourism has changed since the days of Thomas Cook’s first excursions.
