To Dam or Not to Dam
- Synopsis
- Focuses on the findings of the World Commission on Dams, launched by Nelson Mandela in November 2000. Visits three countries to investigate the effects of the dams built there. In Brazil and Thailand local people were found not to have been consulted, and not to have benefited from the dams, which destroyed their livelihoods. Norway, by contrast, has been successfully building dams with minimal adverse effects for the last hundred years. This seems to be due to a combination of full accountability on decisions made, public participation in policy-making and innovative solutions to the threat of environmental degradation.
