Synopsis
In programmes devoted to each of nine artists, Sir Lawrence Gowing explores the works of Bruegel, Goya Matisse, Masaccio, Vermeer, Cezanne, Giotto, Rembrandt and Turner, discussing the historical and social backgrounds against which the artists worked and concentrating on a small number of canvasses. Each programme includes film of the places that particularly inspired the artists.
