Thixoforming: Sheffield Shaping the Future

Synopsis
Explains thixoforming, a metal-shaping process researched and developed at Sheffield. It falls within a generic class of processes called semi-solid metal forming or SSM. Looks at traditional approaches of casting and forging, highlighting the benefits and drawbacks of each process; thixoforming is believed to combine the benefits of these two techniques while removing the drawbacks. Follows the thixoforming process from the initial cut billet of extruded tool steel through to a formed product. Demonstrates the thixotropic properties of a billet of aluminium alloy which has been brought to its semi-solid state.
