Vermeer: The Astronomer
- Alternative title
- Palettes: The Texture of Light
- Synopsis
- Discusses Jan Vermeer’s painting ‘The Astronomer’ (1668) in terms of the painting itself, the painter, and a palette of colour: pigment, composition and light effects. Vermeer worked in private houses using ordinary daylight, and perhaps a camera obscura. The painting contains various riddles, with meanings that escape us today.
