Talking About Anxiety

Synopsis
Dr John Alderdice defines anxiety, talks about what it is with its physical and emotional characteristics, normal anxiety and stressful situations and abnormal anxiety that requires some form of intervention. Examines the forms of treatment available, looks at symptomatic treatment, behavioural treatment, cognitive psychotherapies and dynamic psychotherapies. Discusses what anxiety states are like for patient and family and the role that helpers have: looking at the role of the psychiatrist, GP, nurse, social worker and the caring friend or neighbour. Gives guidance on the approach that the carer might take and gives pointers to successful outcomes.
