Sugar Dollies

Synopsis
A performance recorded at the Gate theatre in London, on 10 April 1996 as part of the Gate Biennale, a celebration of contemporary European theatre. The play, written in German in 1995 by Klaus Chatten, translated by Anthony Vivis and directed here by Indhu Rubasingham, it concerns Babette and her overweight daughter Tabea, who enter the ratings-topping blind date television show ‘Sugar Dollies’ dressed as Batman and Robin. At the auditions they meet fellow hopefuls for a show that promises to bring light into meaningless lives for at least half an hour. The edgy reality of a reuinited Germany is depicted by figures whose lives alternate between tragedy and hysterical farce.
