Studies of Handicapped Children (3 Parts)

Synopsis
The programmes, recorded at the Spastics Society’s Thomas Delarue School, are not primarily concerned with the education of the students, but rather with the ways in which students attempt to overcome their motor handicaps with whatever help the school can provide.
1: shows out-of-classroom activities in which students are not closely under the eye of the staff. It illustrates the range of locomotion difficulties, something of the students’ social interaction and their spontaneous problem-solving attempts.
2: shows staff contributions to the resolution of problems caused by physical disability. Physio- and occupational therapy sessions are observed and the responsiveness and co-operation of the students is seen. A small group of students is accompanied on a shopping trip as part of their independence training.
3: concentrates on the more scholastic aspects of the school programme as distinct from the more specialised parts for physically handicapped children. The Delarue School has serious educational aims which may include, variously as required, GCE O- and A- level, university and polytechnic entrance and CSE.
